Creating a network of Marine Protected Areas in São Tomé and Príncipe through a co-management approach (Blue Action Fund, 2018-2023)
Position: Independent consultant for Fauna & Flora International (2019-2021)
This project aims to designate the first MPAs across São Tomé and Príncipe to create a network of effective marine protection, and establish a system of participatory fisheries management and conservation, prioritising community engagement in an ecosystem level governance approach to planning. The project aims to contribute to enhanced local livelihoods through the promotion of sustainable fishing practises, and improve local wellbeing through increased participation in marine resource decision making.

Omali Vida Nón (São Tomé and Príncipe, funded by Darwin Initiative, 2016-2019)

The project Omali Vida Nón / Umuen Vida No ("Sea Our Life" in the Creoule languages of Príncipe) aims to promote better management of marine resources in Principe island through the participation of those who are mainly affected: fishers and fish traders (palaiês). The project was created to test and implement ways of producing benefits for both fishing communities and marine resources, having strong research and community engagement components.

The project aims to establish local fishing councils (CCPs) and to work with them to provide the resources necessary to establish co-management plans for key marine ecosystems.

Minimisation actions in the Sabôr river (Portugal)
Position: Field technician for Biota (2013, internship funded by Santander-CRUE-CEPYME).
The project involved several minimisation actions for the construction of a dam in the Sabôr river, including relocation of naiad (freshwater bivalves) populations from the areas affected by the dam to unaffected areas upstream.

ECOTONE – Management of riparian habitats towards the conservation of endangered invertebrates (funded by LIFE - EU)
Position: Laboratory technician for Quercus (2013, internship funded by Santander-CRUE-CEPYME).
The objective of the ECOTONE project was the conservation of alder alluvial forests in two Portuguese rivers. This included improving the conservation status of two species of freshwater pearl mussels (Margaritifera margaritifera and Unio crassus), by testing several ex-situ reproduction techniques to increase the mussel populations.
